How to Fill Out a PDF
Many PDFs have fillable fields you can type into directly. Others are flat scans where you add text boxes yourself. Both can be done for free.
Step by step
- Open the PDF in a capable app. Use Preview on Mac, the Files app on iPhone, Acrobat Reader on Windows or Android, or your web browser.
- Click into form fields. If the PDF has fillable fields, click or tap a field and type. Check boxes by clicking them.
- Add text to flat PDFs. If there are no fields, use the text tool: Text in Preview's Markup toolbar, Fill & Sign in Acrobat Reader, or Add text in Microsoft Edge.
- Sign and date. Add your signature and the date where required.
- Save the completed file. Save the file, or use Save As to keep a blank copy for later.
Browser PDF viewers
Chrome, Edge and Safari can often fill in simple form fields directly. Download the file after filling to keep your entries, and check that they were saved.
Signing after filling
