The Best Free Electronic Signature Software
"Free" means three different things in e-signatures. There are free plans from paid services, capped at a few documents a month. There is open-source software you can run yourself at no license cost. And there are tools already on your computer that let you sign your own PDF but cannot collect anyone else's signature with an audit trail. Which one is right depends on one question: are you signing, or asking others to sign? Here is an honest roundup, including our own free plan and where others beat it.
Do you need to sign, or to collect signatures?
If someone sent you a PDF and you just need to put your signature on it, you do not need an e-signature service at all. Preview on a Mac, the Files app on an iPhone, Adobe Acrobat Reader on any platform, or our free Sign PDF tool will do it in a minute. Our guide how to sign a PDF walks through each.
If you need a client, tenant or employee to sign, you want a service that emails a signing link, tracks who opened and signed, and produces a certificate of completion. That record, the audit trail, is what makes a sent document easy to defend later. This is where free plans come in.
Which e-signature services have a free plan?
These are permanent free plans for sending, as listed on each vendor's pricing page when we checked in late September 2026:
BoldSign: Essential plan, 25 envelopes a month and 2 templates. The most generous free allowance we found. See BoldSign alternative.
eSignSimple: 5 documents a month, unlimited signers, templates, web forms, API access, and an audit trail with certificate of completion on every document. Signers need no account. See pricing.
Zoho Sign: single user, 5 envelopes a month. See Zoho Sign alternative.
Documenso (hosted): 5 documents a month, up to 10 recipients per document. See Documenso alternative.
PandaDoc: 5 documents a month with up to 5 templates. See PandaDoc alternative.
Jotform Sign: 10 signed documents a month on the Starter plan, with Jotform branding. See Jotform Sign alternative.
SignWell: 3 documents a month and 1 template. See SignWell alternative.
Yousign: 2 signature requests a month; Smallpdf via Sign.com: 2 documents a month. See Yousign alternative and Smallpdf alternative.
DocuSign and Dropbox Sign let people sign for free and offer trials, but do not list a permanent free sending plan. Our free DocuSign alternative page goes into detail.
Is open-source e-signature software really free?
DocuSeal and Documenso publish their code, and both can be self-hosted at no license cost. That is genuinely free in money, not in time: you run the server, handle email delivery so signing links do not land in spam, keep backups, and apply updates. For a developer or a company with an IT person, that is a fair trade and gives full control over where data lives. For a freelancer, a hosted free plan is usually the better use of an afternoon.
Details and hosted prices are on DocuSeal alternative and Documenso alternative.
What do free plans usually leave out?
Expect limits on monthly volume, templates and senders. Bulk send, branding, integrations, SMS delivery and ID verification are usually paid features where they exist at all. Check whether the free plan includes a certificate of completion, whether reminders work, and whether signers must create an account (on ours they do not).
Also check what happens when you hit the cap. Some tools stop you mid-month; on eSignSimple a document counts when it is sent, so you can see your count before you send. If you regularly need more than a free plan allows, compare flat prices: our Personal plan is $4.99/month for unlimited documents, or $1.99/week or $39.99/year.
Which free option should you choose?
Signing your own documents: use a built-in tool or our Sign PDF tool; need a signature image first? Try the signature generator. Occasionally sending to clients: a hosted free plan with an audit trail, such as ours, BoldSign's or Zoho Sign's. Want control and have a server: self-host DocuSeal or Documenso. Sending many documents: a free plan will frustrate you; compare paid options in our best DocuSign alternatives guide.
Our take
We would rather you pick the right free tool than the wrong paid one. If BoldSign's 25 envelopes fit your month better than our 5 documents, use BoldSign. What we care about is that you do not sign contracts by printing, scanning and emailing photos, and that you keep a real record of who signed. Our free plan is built for freelancers who send a few contracts a month and want every one to finish with a certificate of completion, no signer accounts, and no trial clock.
Frequently asked questions
Is free e-signature software legally binding?
The price of the tool does not change the legal effect. A simple electronic signature with a good audit trail is generally valid for most contracts in the US and EU; see are electronic signatures legally binding.
Can I sign a PDF for free without an account?
Yes. Our Sign PDF tool, Preview on Mac and Acrobat Reader all let you sign your own PDF for free.
What is the most generous free e-signature plan?
Of the plans we compared, BoldSign's free Essential plan allowed the most (25 envelopes a month). Limits change, so check before relying on them.
Can I send to several signers on a free plan?
On eSignSimple, yes: free documents can have multiple signers. See how to send a document to multiple signers.
Do I need a credit card for eSignSimple's free plan?
No. The free plan is permanent and allows 5 documents a month; upgrade only if you need more.
