How to Sign a Lease Online
Leases are commonly signed electronically today. Whether you are a tenant signing a PDF your landlord sent or a landlord collecting signatures, the process is straightforward.
Step by step
- Read the whole lease. Check rent, deposit, term, notice periods and who pays for what before signing.
- Tenants: open the PDF. If you received a PDF, open it in Preview, the Files app, Acrobat Reader or a browser-based signing tool.
- Sign and date every required spot. Leases often need signatures or initials in several places. Add each one plus the date.
- Return the signed copy. Send the signed lease back as your landlord requested and keep a copy.
- Landlords: send for signature. To collect signatures from multiple tenants with a record of who signed and when, use an e-signature service with an audit trail.
Is an online lease valid?
