How to Sign a PDF on Windows

Windows has no dedicated signing app, but two free options cover most needs: Adobe Acrobat Reader and the drawing tool built into Microsoft Edge's PDF viewer.

Step by step

  1. Open the PDF in Adobe Acrobat Reader. Install the free Acrobat Reader from Adobe's website if you do not have it, then open the PDF.
  2. Open Fill & Sign. Find the fill and sign tools in the tools menu. Adobe updates its interface regularly, so use the tool search if you cannot see them.
  3. Add your signature. Choose to sign yourself and add a signature. You can type, draw or upload an image of your signature.
  4. Place and resize. Click where the signature belongs and adjust its size. Add text for the date if needed.
  5. Save. Save the file. Use Save As to keep the original unsigned copy.

Using Microsoft Edge instead

Edge opens PDFs by default on many Windows PCs. Its built-in PDF viewer has annotation tools in the toolbar, including a drawing tool you can use to write your signature with a mouse, pen or touchscreen, and a text tool for the date. Save the file when you are done.

Drawing with a mouse can look rough. A saved, reusable signature in Acrobat Reader or a typed signature often looks cleaner.

A browser-based option
