An Adobe Fill & Sign alternative for when you need other people to sign

Adobe Acrobat Reader's Fill & Sign is free: you can fill in a PDF, add a typed, drawn or image signature and save the file. It is a tool for signing your own copy. To send a document to others, a free Adobe account allows only two e-signature requests every 30 days; regular sending needs Acrobat Standard ($14.99/month on an annual plan) or Pro ($19.99/month) for templates and bulk send. eSignSimple is built for sending: 3 documents a month free, 25 for $4.99/month and unlimited for $9.99/month. If you only ever sign forms yourself, Reader is fine.

Most people meet Adobe's signing through Fill & Sign in the free Acrobat Reader app or Adobe's online sign-PDF tool. You open a PDF, type into the fields, click Sign, and draw, type or upload an image of your signature, then place it anywhere on the page and save. Adobe states that Reader can fill forms and sign PDFs for free, while editing text and images needs Acrobat Standard or Pro.

Sending a document for others to sign is a different feature called Request e-signatures. Adobe's own page says a free Acrobat account can complete two request e-signature transactions every 30 days on a rolling basis; recipients sign in the browser without an account. Beyond that, Acrobat Standard includes sending and tracking signature requests, and Acrobat Pro adds web forms, reusable e-sign templates and bulk sending. Large organizations buy Adobe Acrobat Sign, which we compare separately in our Adobe Sign alternative page.

eSignSimple only does the sending side: you upload a PDF or Word file, place fields for each signer, and send. Signers need no account, and each completed document gets an audit trail and a certificate of completion with a SHA-256 hash. We are not a PDF editor. For signing your own file, our free sign PDF tool and fill PDF tool do the same job as Fill & Sign in a browser.

Where is Adobe Acrobat Fill & Sign the better choice?

  • Fill & Sign is free with no document limit for signing your own PDFs, and Acrobat Reader is installed on a huge number of computers already.
  • Acrobat Standard and Pro are full PDF editors: change text and images, organize pages, convert files. We do none of that.
  • Desktop and mobile apps that work with files on your device; our native apps are still coming soon.
  • An upgrade path to Adobe Acrobat Sign for enterprises that need integrations, advanced identity checks or admin controls.
  • Adobe is the format's creator, and many recipients already trust its name.

Why do people switch to eSignSimple?

You need others to sign, not just you

Fill & Sign is for your own copy. Collecting signatures means sending a document, tracking it and getting a record of who signed when. That is the whole of eSignSimple, starting with a free plan of 3 documents a month.

Two free requests a month is tight

A free Adobe account stops at 2 signature requests every 30 days. Our Bronze plan sends 25 documents a month for $4.99, and Silver has no document cap for $9.99. See pricing.

Templates and bulk send without the Pro price

Adobe puts reusable templates and bulk sending in Acrobat Pro at $19.99/month on an annual plan. We include templates on every plan and bulk send on Silver.

You don't need a PDF editor

If you only edit documents in Word or Google Docs and just need them signed, paying for an editor is money spent on features you won't open. Upload a Word file and we convert it to PDF.

Who should pick which?

You regularly send contracts, quotes or forms to clients for signature. You only sign forms that other people send you.
You need more than 2 signature requests a month without paying for a PDF editor. You need to edit PDF text, convert files or work offline on desktop.
You want templates, web forms and an API at a low flat price.Your company already licenses Acrobat Pro for everyone.

How do you switch from Adobe Acrobat Fill & Sign to eSignSimple?

  1. Keep Acrobat Reader for signing forms you receive; it remains free.
  2. Download signed agreements and their audit reports from your Adobe account.
  3. Create an eSignSimple account with Google and upload the documents you send most.
  4. Place fields for each signer, save recurring documents as templates, and send.
  5. If you were on Standard or Pro only for signing, cancel at renewal; our guide on cancelling Adobe Sign covers Adobe's subscription terms.

Our take

For signing a PDF someone sent you, Adobe's free Fill & Sign is perfectly good, and so are built-in tools on Mac, iPhone and Android; our how to sign a PDF guide lists them. You don't need any e-signature service for that.

Once you are the one sending documents, the free tier runs out at two requests a month, and the next step is a $14.99 to $19.99 PDF editor subscription. If you don't need the editor, eSignSimple is the cheaper way to get signatures with an audit trail.

We compare published features and prices from each vendor's own website and list the sources above. Where we could not verify something, we say so. Adobe Acrobat Fill & Sign is a trademark of its owner; eSignSimple is not affiliated with it. See how we protect documents on our security page and what each plan includes on pricing.

Frequently asked questions

Is Adobe Fill & Sign free?

Yes. Acrobat Reader and Adobe's online tool let you fill in and sign your own PDFs for free. Sending a document to others is limited to 2 requests every 30 days on a free Adobe account (checked October 2026).

Is a Fill & Sign signature legally binding?

An electronic signature can be binding when the signer intends to sign, but a signature you place on your own copy doesn't create a record of the other parties signing. A signing service records each signer in an audit trail. See are electronic signatures legally binding?.

Yes. Our sign PDF tool lets you sign your own PDF in the browser, and the free plan sends 3 documents a month to other signers with an audit trail.
