A HoneyBook alternative when you only need contracts signed

HoneyBook is a client-management platform for service businesses: proposals, contracts, invoices, payments, scheduling and automations in one place, from $29/month billed yearly ($36 billed monthly), and only for businesses in the US, Canada, the UK and Australia. eSignSimple does one part of that: getting documents signed, from $0 for 3 documents a month or $4.99/month for 25. If you want HoneyBook's booking-to-payment flow, stay with it. If you mainly need clients to sign a contract, it is more than you need.

HoneyBook is built around the client journey of a freelancer or small studio. A lead fills in a form, you send a "smart file" that can combine a proposal, a contract and an invoice, the client picks services, signs and pays a deposit, and automations handle follow-ups. Contracts are one feature among many: you write them in HoneyBook's editor or start from its template library, smart fields fill in client names and dates, and the client signs by typing or drawing a signature from a secure link. You then countersign, and the client's copy updates. If an invoice follows the contract, the client cannot open it until they sign.

eSignSimple is much narrower. You upload the contract you already have, as a PDF or Word file, place signature, date and text fields on it, add one or more signers by email, choose whether they sign at the same time or in a signing order, and send. Signers do not need an account. When everyone has signed, you get a final PDF with a certificate of completion that records names, emails, timestamps, IP addresses and a SHA-256 hash. We have no CRM, no invoicing, no payments, no scheduler and no proposals.

So the honest question is not which tool is better, but which job you are paying for. HoneyBook's pricing is built for running your whole client process; ours is built for signatures. Below is what we found on HoneyBook's pricing page and help center on October 14, 2026, and how the two compare for the contract part.

One practical difference stands out: HoneyBook contracts live inside its own editor. Its contract page talks about templates and pasting your text in, not about uploading an existing PDF and placing fields on it. If your contract is a finished PDF from a lawyer, a client or a landlord, eSignSimple signs that file as it is.

Why do people switch to eSignSimple?

You only need the signature part

If you invoice in your accounting software and book clients by email, paying $29 to $129 a month for a full client platform is hard to justify. eSignSimple is $0 for 3 documents a month, $4.99/month for 25, or $9.99/month for unlimited documents. See pricing.

Your contract is already a PDF or Word file

Upload it as it is and place fields on top of the real layout. Nothing to rebuild in another editor, and the signed result is a PDF with a certificate of completion. Good for a freelance contract or a client's own paperwork.

More than two people need to sign

Add as many signers as the document needs, choose parallel signing or a signing order, and follow each person's status on the dashboard.

You work outside the US, Canada, the UK and Australia

HoneyBook only accepts businesses in those four countries. eSignSimple works anywhere, in 10 languages, and your signers can be in any country.

A clear evidence record

Every completed document gets an audit trail and a certificate of completion with a SHA-256 hash, on every plan including Free.

How do you switch from HoneyBook to eSignSimple?

  1. Download your signed HoneyBook contracts as PDFs so your records stay complete.
  2. Copy your contract text into a Word file, or export it as a PDF, and keep your best clauses as your master version.
  3. Sign up for eSignSimple with Google, upload the file and drag signature, date and text fields into place.
  4. Save it as a template so each new client takes a minute: fill in names, add signers, send.
  5. Move invoicing to your accounting tool if you no longer need HoneyBook, then cancel at the end of your billing period.

Our take

HoneyBook is a good product for what it is: a booking-to-payment system for photographers, planners, designers and coaches. If you use its proposals, payments and automations every week, the contract feature comes with it and switching to us would mean losing the rest. Keep it.

Where we see people overpay is when HoneyBook was bought for contracts alone. If you only need a client to sign a PDF, with an audit trail you can show later, a signing tool does that for a fraction of the cost. Compare also PandaDoc if proposals are your main need, and read how to get a contract signed remotely.

We compare published features and prices from each vendor's own website and list the sources above. Where we could not verify something, we say so. HoneyBook is a trademark of its owner; eSignSimple is not affiliated with it. See how we protect documents on our security page and what each plan includes on pricing.
