Frequently asked questions

What is a bill of sale used for?

A bill of sale records that ownership of an item moved from a seller to a buyer for a stated price. It serves as proof of purchase and can help with registration, insurance, taxes, or resolving later disputes.

Does a bill of sale need to be notarized?

Many private sales don't require notarization, but some authorities require it for certain items or transfers. Check the rules of the place where the item is sold or registered.

What does "as is" mean in a bill of sale?

Selling "as is" means the buyer accepts the item in its current condition and the seller makes no promises about quality beyond what is written. Some consumer protection laws limit how far this can go.

Can a bill of sale be signed electronically?

In most places, electronic signatures are recognized for sales of personal property. eSignSimple keeps an audit trail with timestamps, IP addresses, and a document hash to help show who signed and when.
